A brief history about Mobility
Have you ever realized that mobility and transportation in general have always been a strong feature in our lives? Thanks to leaps in mobility, people and entire civilizations were allowed to move around the world, and thus evolve. Mobility for sure changed through times, crossing various phases in different eras: at the beginning, animals were the most common means of transportation (i.e. direct horse riding) but soon new technologies followed up, with an increase in the use of big and complex floating craft (boats, ships, etc.) or evolutions in how animal traction was applied to transportation (i.e. horses-drawn carriages) to increase the variety to cover different routes (J.L. In recent years, almost all of the developments and innovations in mobility industry concern both data production and gathering. But, as we know, leveraging data to improve mobility is not new and it is reflected in virtually every aspect of the ecosystem. For example, just think at the engine oil diagnostics which serve to extend engine life, the data-based preventive (and corrective too), maintenance checks and services for cars, data-based structural and functional capacities of roads and bridges and many others. Indeed, it would be difficult to identify an element in the transportation system that is not involved with big encompassing data.
The current situation: a new age for mobility
With the fastest growth and spreading of IoT technologies, Big Data and AI in almost all fields, mobility is facing many new transformations, leading to an always-connected, efficient and multi-modal “mobility ecosystem”. Over the time we will speak less in terms of buying and owning vehicles; new ways of experiencing mobility services are on the verge of booming. Shared cars (i.e. Car2Go or Zipcar) or sharing your vehicle with strangers (i.e. Turo/Volvero).
In short, we can say that mobility is being reimagined.
In the early twentieth century, thanks to the quick growth in transportations technologies, the concept of mobility have been reinvented and we’re just at the beginning of the shift. For example, thanks to the recent developments (in electronic sensors and A.I.) autonomous vehicles started to be a hot topic although it will likely take longer than what expected for them to have a bigger impact. Semiautonomous vehicles are increasingly mainstream as manufacturers add new technologies. In addition, new services are coming or already are the standard, such as shipping (ride) sharing (Uber, Lyft, etc.), high-speed transportation (i.e. the Hyperloop) and many others.
As stated in the Report issued by ’19 Transportation Research Board, transportation is dealing with revolutionary challenges: the development of new means of transportation and the advent of disruptive technologies such as drones and automated vehicles are spreading among people but rapid innovations in urban transportation services and possible changes in national policies affecting trade (the trade war between USA and China for example), environment preservation (ever restrictive rules for companies and providers) and the need of new sources of energy could lead to consequences like traffic congestion, increasing fuel consumption, and emissions either markedly better or markedly worse. We know for sure that we need something disruptive to avoid the worst. transportation will surely help to change things, pointing to the right direction.
