The Bridge of Sighs is one of the most recognizable and iconic symbols of Venice. The bridge is located in the heart of the city, in the San Marco area, and connects the Doge’s Palace to the prison. Its name refers to the legends that the prisoners, who were led across the bridge from the prison to the courthouse, heaved a sigh as they took a last look at the city.

Actually, the name “dei Sospiri” was given to the bridge only in the 19th century, during the romanticism, when the bridge was seen as a romantic and melancholic place. Due to the huge influx of tourists, the bridge can get very busy during the summer months and during the carnival period. 5. Il Duomo di Firenze

The Florence Cathedral (or Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore), is the symbol of the greatness of the city of the Italian Renaissance. The construction of the cathedral began in 1296 and was completed almost 150 years later, in 1436.

One of the most spectacular features of the Duomo is its dome, one of the largest masonry domes in the world, built by Filippo Brunelleschi. To climb to the top of the dome, one must walk a series of narrow and steep ramps, which lead up to the top of the drum. 7. L’isola di Burano
